Sassis has been founded by a reverend abbot of Saint Savin, who would have started at Sassis a breeding farm of milk cows with the name "lourdaise".

The roman church is really worth a visit, she possesses a sculpted granite holy water barrel of the XIII century, its absis has the characteristic to have two flat buttresses going up the the roof, decorated with medaillons, both roughly and elegant.

About 1530, the Hospitaliers of Saint Jean, owners of the fortified church of Luz Saint Sauveur had a farmstead at Sassis where they produced their food and the food for the pilgrims passing by, on their way to spanish sanctuaries and most of all those who went to Saint Jacques de Compostelle.

For those who are passionate by history and literature, we must mention certainly the monography of the village Sassis, written in 1887 and which is real piece of art. Click here
